Abstract
The article highlights the foreign experience of evaluating the quality of geography textbooks for institutions of general secondary education. It was found that one of the trends in the foreign practice of textbook creation is to focus mainly on the analysis of the structural components of the geography textbook (textual and illustrative material, a system of exercises and tasks, etc.) in the context of the implementation of (1) key positions of the model and/or curriculum, as well as (2) the role of textbooks in evaluating learning outcomes, the formation of acquired competencies and its use in practice, the possibility of self-evaluation, ensuring the development of spatial and creative thinking, promoting multicultural (polycultural) education, preparing for an independent lifestyle and self-realization. Attention is focused on the conclusions of foreign researchers regarding the problems of modern textbook creation, in particular: limited mechanisms for implementing the concepts of education reform and opportunities for the development of students of spatial thinking, critical multicultural (polycultural) education; the presence of superficial, and in some cases, unreliable information; reproduction of stereotypical views; the need to finalize (improve) the vast majority of geography textbooks, etc. It has been found that in foreign practice, the role of the teacher regarding the formation of students' knowledge, abilities, and skills is actualized in comparison with the textbook, which becomes an auxiliary tool in modern didactic systems. The prospects for further domestic research on the problems of textbook creation for institutions of general secondary education from the standpoint of modern foreign approaches to assessing their quality and compliance with modern world trends are outlined.
