Abstract
Oleksandra Savchenko's views on the "ability to learn" as a special object of formation, development of thinking and creative abilities of students with different educational opportunities are summarized. The reflection of the problem in the normative base of education, developed under the guidance of the scientist, is characterized; the structure of the key competence "ability to learn" and the characteristics of its components are presented. The phased content of the introduction of the competence approach in education is substantiated with the participation of O.Ya. Savchenko, which was implemented by her in the scientific and methodological support of primary education.
