Abstract
The essence of international policy towards the elderly is characterized and the relevance of education of the elderly in Ukraine is substantiated. The content of the native legislative provision of education of the elderly is revealed, its purpose, tasks and functions are determined. Theoretical bases of the University of the Third Age as socio-cultural centers created for the elderly in order to implement the principle of lifelong learning and expand their worldview to adapt and diversify life in the postprofessional period, as well as a set of principles and psychological and physiological characteristics of the elderly affect the effectiveness of their training. The main types of competencies required for the teaching staff of third age universities are substantiated. The materials will be of interest to managers, scientists, research and teaching staff, social workers, a wide range of people working with the elderly.
