Abstract

Modern times require modern solutions. In new realities, conventional ideas should be updated and modernized, and customary objects should acquire enhanced functions and features. The author tries to apply the competence-based approach to the scienceoriented extracurricular educational activity of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (hereinafter – the JASU), considering standard national categories of specialized scientific education, European policy and global efforts aimed at engaging ordinary citizens in science, and also the advanced nature of the JASU’s educational practices focused on training of young researchers. According to the author, it is necessary now to review all conventional approaches to the education of gifted students at the JASU and establish new educational requirements as a set of competences in demand today. The paper presents an analysis of national and international scientific sources exploring research and scientific competences. The author substantiates the need to expand the content of research competence provided for by the Standard of Science-Oriented Specialized Education, and based on the JASU activity, create a new, more complex category – scientific competence covering not only students’ research skills but also their scientific results. The paper also presents the author's view on the definition and content of the JASU students’ scientific competence. Its structural model is based primarily on the value-based attitude to scientific activity, cognitive skills, abilities to theoretically comprehend and explore scientific problems, scientific creativity and inventive power, practical research skills and mastery of information technology. Transversal abilities embedded in the competence model include social, communicative, personal-regulatory, entrepreneurial, etc.
