Abstract
The article analyzes various aspects of the readiness of primary school graduates for reading activities in primary school. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of students' development of four groups of basic reading skills, defined by international experts to assess the quality of reading and understanding of artistic and informational texts; the typical difficulties that students face when working with these texts are substantiated. The contradictions between the primary and basic levels of the school in the context of the formation of individual reading skills and the development of skills to work with information texts are characterized.
