Abstract

The author provides a thorough analysis of communicative competence in foreign languages from the perspective of its “cultural potential”. According to the generally accepted standards sociocultural component of communicative competence is aimed at shaping students’ cultural awareness by providing versatile information on the country where the target language is spoken. While some methodologists insist that getting acquainted with norms and traditions of other countries fosters better understanding of student’s own country, we consider this approach as faulty. Exposing students to norms and values of communities where target language is spoken will help them better understand native speakers’ way of life and avoid possible mistakes while communicating with them, but has minimal effect on students’ perception of their native culture or shaping their intercultural awareness. Intercultural competence is considered as an ability of a person to realize differences and similarities between cultures in various dimensions, primarily between students’ native culture and that of a country whose language is being learned. Besides, students have to understand that every culture comprises numerous subcultures (i.e. youth culture, culture of immigrant communities etc.). In order to achieve real ‘intercultural competence’ it is deemed necessary to provide topics and situations where two (or more) cultures encounter, thus making students notice their typical features and compare them in learning context. Taking into consideration that language education is aimed at shaping students’ communicative skills, within framework of intercultural approach it is deemed necessary to encourage students provide various information on their native country, solve typical communicative situations where two cultures are involved, develop their mediation skills. Besides, it is recommended to develop tolerant attitude to values and beliefs of other cultures if they are different or misunderstandings are possible. In order to make intercultural component a valid element of school education it should be integrated and detailed in school curriculum.
