Abstract
This article clarifies the meaning of the concepts of “translation” and “sign language translator”. The legislative documents concerning the education of persons with hearing impairment and the documents of the current Ukrainian legislation, which regulates the activity of sign language interpreters, are listed. It is emphasized that certain information and statistics concerning sign language translators are only available in the Ukrainian All-Ukrainian Non-Governmental Organization for Disabled Persons “Ukrainian Society of the Deaf. It is known that in Ukraine there are about 300 sign language translators, of which 30 are educational. It is noted that the beginning of the history of access to higher education in Ukraine by deaf people as part of a special group dates to the end of the 60s of the last century, when special groups for deaf students begin to open in higher education institutions. It is emphasized that the reason for this is the need of the garment industry of the Societies of the post-Soviet republics, including the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf, and the creation of compact groups of deaf persons at large state-owned enterprises, – in specialists from among the deaf. It is noted that the primacy of opening special groups for this category of people in Ukraine belongs to the Kiev College of Light Industry, which began group training for deaf students since 1958. Educational sign language translators who worked in the college were conditionally classified into three time-related periods. To this end, three tables, with a list of all sign language translators, are provided, which allow us to trace the period of work and education. It is pointed out that with the change of the state educational policy and innovative changes in the college, related to personnel issues, the strategies of in-house cooperation of the team of translators of the mentioned college are updated. The circle of certain problems that the educational team is working on is indicated: the growth of professional skill depends on the level of gesture-communicative competence; designations and translation by means of the Ukrainian language of sign language of terminological concepts; deepening linguistic knowledge in practice (seminars, trainings, courses, certification), improving curatorial work through various forms of work with deaf students.
