Abstract
The author highlighted the necessity of citizens’ possession of key competencies that ensure the constant development of a personality and productive interaction with the globalised world. It is underlined that in view of the new requirements for the functioning of the EU economy an updated version of the European Reference Framework of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning which includes eight key competences (Literacy competence; Multilingual competence; Mathematical competence and competence in science, technology and engineering; Digital competence; Personal, social and learning to learn competence; Citizenship competence; Entrepreneurship competence; Cultural awareness and expression competence) was adopted in 2018. It is concluded that the EU considering the competence approach as a strategy for the development of education in the Member States, emphasizes the need for a holistic approach providing legislative initiatives, curriculum transformation and the introduction of innovative teaching methods, i.e. interdisciplinary learning, collaborative learning, inquiry and project-based learning, experiential learning, cross-discipline collaboration, mobility, active student participation in the learning process, etc.
