Abstract
Issues related to the need to modernize the current system of assessment of academic achievement of primary and secondary school students are considered. One of the ways to modernize the assessment system, in our opinion, is a combination of traditional current and formative assessment. Formative assessment should be considered as part of the entire system of assessment of academic achievement and it should not conflict with current and final assessment. Final assessment is a mandatory component of a holistic system of criterion assessment of student achievement.
