Abstract
The article is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous Ukrainian writer, historian, folklorist, ethnographer, literary critic, linguist, translator, cultural and educational figure Panteleimon Kulish (1819–1897). The process of emergence in the Russian Empire at the turn of the 1850s and 1860s of the social and peda-gogical movement, part of which became the educational activity of the nationally conscious Ukrainian intelligentsia, is traced. The importance of P. Kulish's staff against the background of this public activity is substantiated. The main focus is on Kulish's activities in the context of the Ukrainian intellectuals' struggle for the right of the people to receive education in their mother tongue. The role of the figure as one of the founders of the creation of Ukrainian textbooks for elementary education and the publisher of cheap books with the best works of the Ukrai-nian writers of that time for the ordinary unedu-cated reader is highlighted. It is noted that the broad educational movement of the Ukrainian intelligentsia provoked opposition from the imperial authorities, which saw in it separatist tendencies. This led to the emergence of the Valuyevsky Circular (1863), which forbade the publication in Ukrainian of educational literature and books for the initial reading of the people. But all those forms of specific practical educa-tional activity that arose at the turn of the 1850s and 1860s. (including the publication of Ukrai-nian textbooks and cheap brochures for the education of the people) were used more or less actively (depending on the political barometer) by the Ukrainian intelligentsia until 1917. The article uses the publications of P. Kulish's contemporaries, which give an assessment of his activity and correspondence of that period. The publications of B.Grinchenko, D. Doroshenko, E. Kyryliuk, O. Makoyev, V. Miyakovsky, which characterize the formation and devel-opment of Kulish Studies at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, were also important sources in the process of research and appreciation of P. Kulish's educational activities.
