Abstract
The article reveals the ideas of Ukrainian teachers on the reform of school education in the imperial era (early twentieth century - 1917). It is proved that in the pages of periodicals, congresses and other gatherings they developed a large-scale discourse on reforming the state of non-national general secondary education in order to create a new Ukrainian school based on the best ideas of domestic and foreign pedagogy. The principles defined by them (national, democratic, child-centered, etc.) laid the foundations of the current New Ukrainian School. The ideas of Ukrainian teachers are realized and developed in the educational process of independent Ukraine.
