Abstract
The article highlights the main approaches to the design and development of a school history textbook focused on the development of students' critical thinking. The characteristics and definitions of the concept of critical thinking, the main requirements that must meet this type of textbook and its differences from today's textbooks on history. Features of the content of the textbook, the role and place of questions of different types, requirements for cognitive tasks in the textbook, the basis for their development, typology depending on the component of the educational process in which the textbook is used and didactic tasks solved by the teacher. Possibilities of application of special methods of development of critical thinking in the methodical apparatus of the textbook are opened.
