Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate current approaches to early assistance to hearing-impaired children, as well as to determine the fields and specific conditions of implementing these approaches. Methods we used for this purpose are as follow: analysis of printed sources and reference documents, review and generalization of practical experience. We have discovered that early assistance to children with hearing impairment ought to be multidisciplinary, family-centered and multi-faceted; it should be put in action not only through instructing children, but primarily through instructing parents. We have determined the main objective, fields and efficient styles of learning. Pedagogical assistance to young children with hearing impairment is aimed at multiple dimensions of activity and at the impact on primary directions of child’s development. These are: pedagogical diagnostics of response to acoustic stimuli; communicative intentions and manifestation thereof; forms of interaction; adaptation to hearing kits and cochlear implants; gaining acoustic impressions; formation of non-verbal and verbal hearing; motor skills (fine and articulatory); mental functions (perception, memory, thinking, attention, imagination); emotion and will; formation of communication, social and interaction skills; substantive and play activity; perception and processing of speech; expansion of passive and active vocabulary etc. The organizational aspect is represented by a set of activities implemented by an interdisciplinary team of support (doctors, engineers, audiologists, teachers of the deaf, psychologists, parents, social workers, representatives of government bodies, communities, etc.). This research can be applied in practice while developing systems of early intervention and early assistance. Early pedagogical assistance to hearing-impaired children is put into practice through instructing parents and doing special exercises in the course of day-to-day communication; it is aimed not at specific skills, but at preventing any limitations of child’s life. It is essential to develop fundamental principles and regulations in regard to providing early assistance to hearing-impaired children in Ukraine; this effort should be intergovernmental.
