Abstract
The author explores the close interaction of philosophy and pedagogy in the intellectual history of humankind. The emphasis is made on the heuristic potential of philosophy in the educational field, with a particular accent on the erroneous view on "philosophy of education" as a separate branch of knowledge. In the context of addressing seminal problems of modern education, it is proved that philosophy in education is not just one of its aspects, but the conceptual core and creative platform of education, which forms both a new vision and understanding of personality and a new image of education. If pedagogy fails to have a philosophical interpretation of its goals and tasks, it inevitably acquires prescriptive nature and becomes a lifeless set of instructions, rules and formalized recommendations.
