Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the empirical study results on individual psychological characteristics of combatants' wives. It is connected to state of their husbands’ deployment during Antiterrorist operation and Joint Forces Operation at the East of Ukraine (before, during and after deployment). The sample has 135 combatants' wives (n = 135), including wives of current military personnel (n = 92) and veterans (n = 42). Their husbands are serving or had served at the Armed Forces of Ukraine (n = 89), at the National Guard of Ukraine (n = 36), at the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (n = 5) and other entities (n = 2). Article contains analysis on such parameters as: personal and reactive anxiety of combatants' wives, indicators of their coping strategies, motivational orientation in interpersonal communications, showing signs of their secondary traumatization on different stages of deployment. Differences in indicators of wives who are military or non-military themselves were analysed as well. In general, about 50% of combatants' wives have a moderate level of anxiety and for about 40% it is high. The relation between anxiety level and coping indicators was identified along with the wives' orientation toward partner acceptance, understanding and compromise. Low level of anxiety goes with the higher level of understanding and acceptance of partner, search for compromises and generally more harmonious communication. On the contrary, women with high and moderate levels of anxiety would less likely seek for social support solving their difficulties. The study has conclusions about characteristics which help to low anxiety level of combatants' wives at different stages of their husbands’ deployment. Recommendations about social and psychological support of wives for the military entities and other providers of psychological support for veterans and their families are offered. Despite some limitations which have to be noticed, these results have important data for further research. Considering lack of the studies in this area in Ukraine this one can be definitely used to improve the system of social and psychological support for military families in general
