Abstract

The article reveals characteristics of the achievement motivation, its mediation by personal parameters at different levels of its formation. The peculiarities of formation and development of the achievement motivation at adolescence are discussed. The article substantiates that the achievements motivation is a complex direction of psychological researches having the purpose to identify and explain a complex system of determinants and self-determinants of successful activities. The achievement motivation involves not only the motives of achievement, but also the situational factors (a value and probability of success, task complexity, etc.). The psychological basis for achievement motivation is the desire to develop one’s own abilities and to maintain them at the highest possible level. On the base of the empirical research, the article reveals the specificity of adolescents’ achievement motivation, determined by a set of interrelated personal parameters and environmental conditions. The article determines that adolescents’ achievement motivation is based on emotional experiences associated with the social acceptance of success. Adolescents having motivation to avoid failures show increased general anxiety due to such factors as fear of self-expression, fear not to meet expectations of their entourage, high fear of knowledge testing. Such students show hesitations, they are too shy to answer before their classmates, are afraid to be lost by doing tasks, raise laughter. Adolescents having a strong motivation for success show low levels of anxiety. Adolescents having a motivation for success have a higher level of subjective control over emotionally positive events and situations, which indicates their ability to achieve success in their lives and good performance.
