Abstract
The steps taken in Ukraine in the 1980s-1990s to realize the person-centered education of elementary school students by means of differentiation and individualized teaching methods are highlighted. It is argued that due to this, in the first years of Ukraine's independence, the development of schooling on the basis of pedocentrism and psychologization of the educational process was intensified. The Yu. Gilbukh’ (1928-2000) views on the way of individualization of schoolchildren’ education, as well as his colleagues (E. Vereshchak, L. Kondratenko, O. Kirichuk, S. Korobko, A. Furman), experimentally tested in the practice of more than 400 secondary schools (1989-1998). It is substantiated that scientists whose achievements (theoretical and applied provision of individualization of the learning process in the Ukrainian school, introduction of psychological diagnostics into school practice, rooting in the minds of teachers of the need for the use of psychological knowledge) were significant in the 1990s, should be attributed to Yu.Gilbukh laboratories of differentiation of education of Institute of Psychology of Ukraine - E. Vereshchak, L. Kondratenko, S. Korobko and others, academician O. Kirichuk, professor A. Furman. Their efforts helped to substantiate the need to introduce in the Ukrainian school psychological support for the education and upbringing of schoolchildren, and led to the introduction of posts of school psychologists, the creation of a separate Psychological Service of the education system of Ukraine, as a whole - to the establishment of a personally oriented paradigm in Ukrainian education.
