In the article, the problem of development of creative abilities of high school students by means of a textbook is considered. It is revealed that one of the important tasks of education is the development of creative abilities of students. The realization of this task is connected with the quality of school textbooks. The focus is on the implementation of the developing textbook function, namely the use of its structural elements for the development of students’ creative potential. The most important structural elements of the textbook are texts and tasks. The requirements for the textbook, which provide the possibility of creative development of students, are determined. Among them: taking into account the psychological patterns of the process of formation of concepts; orientation on the development of ability to reason, justify, prove; orient to the formation of intellectual skills related to the self-regulation of educational and cognitive activity; to create conditions for internal motivation of educational and cognitive activity; to develop creative abilities, initiating the process of birth of meanings. Texts and tasks on Ukrainian literature for students of the 10th grade (profile level) for the purpose of their correspondence with the purpose of development of creative abilities are analyzed. The basic types of reproductive, partly-search and creative tasks, their focus on the development of students’ creative abilities are revealed. It is proved that the number and quality of tasks should be such as to provide students with the opportunity to manifest and develop their creative abilities. Based on the analysis of the textbook, it was concluded that it insufficiently realizes the development function at the level of educational and cognitive tasks. Prospects of further re¬searches concerning use of other structural components of the textbook for the purpose of development of creative abilities of high school students in the conditions of profile education are outlined.
