Abstract

In the article on the basis of the analysis of rare editions from the fund of the V.O. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Pedagogical library of Ukraine considered the problems of higher education in the Ukrainian lands as part of the Russian Empire of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Classification of these publications by types of information is carried out.Their value as a source for scientific researches has been characterized. The influence of socio-political processes on the situation of universities, especially the regulation of their activity by the authorities is highlighted. The attention was paid to the establishment and development of the Kharkov Imperial University and St. Volodymyr’s University of Kyiv as the scientific and educational centers of Ukrainian lands within the Russian Empire.
