Abstract
The relevance of the chosen topic is related to the implementation of the competence-based approach to education, which involves shifting the emphasis from the accumulation of knowledge to the formation of practical skills and the acquisition of necessary life skills (competences). The purpose of the article: to clarify the essence for the concept of «cross-cutting content lines» and to reveal the features of its implementation in the process of teaching foreign languages to primary school students on the basis of the competence-based approach. Research methods: theoretical (analysis of scientific psycho-pedagogical, linguistic and methodical literature, current regulatory documents: standards, programs, etc.). The author reveals the modern definitions of the concepts «competence-based approach», «competence», «key competences», which are proposed in the documents of the New Ukrainian School. She analyzes the new regulatory documents on primary education, in particular: State standard of primary education, Typical educational program for institutions of general secondary education, Typical primary educational program; determines the essence of cross-cutting content lines in the educational process in general and a foreign language course of primary school in particular. The article describes four cross-cutting content lines in teaching foreign languages to students of grades 1-4 on the basis of the competence-based approach: «Environmental Security and Sustainable Development», «Civil Responsibility», «Health and Safety», «Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy», the implementation of which is aimed at forming the student’s ability to apply knowledge and skills from different school subjects in real life situations. These lines are correlated with separate key competences and contribute to the formation of value and ideological orientations of the student, determining his/her behaviour in various life situations. Cross-cutting content lines in a foreign language course of primary school are also correlated with the topics proposed in the programs and compulsory learning outcomes.
