Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reveal the potential of history lessons in the development of students’ critical thinking, which can be realized providing special organization of active learning of students. Under critical thinking, the authors understand the purposeful, active, disciplined (organized according to certain criteria) independent thinking, which allows a person to effectively solve problems and make justified decisions. Among the ways of developing critical thinking in history lessons that are analyzed in the article on concrete examples there are: the organization of free talk and discussion, teaching students to ask questions and recognize the relationships, evaluate information, historical interpretations and the sources from which they come. The article emphasizes the need for the teacher to diversify the sources of information. The information around which students’ reflections are based should be given to them orally, in written, electronic forms, through visual sources, and, if possible, historical artefacts. The main task of the teacher is to ask questions and give tasks, which require from students to use the high-level thinking operations. Development of students’ thinking can be facilitated by performing group tasks for solving problems or creative projects that involve comparing and evaluating various sources of historical information. However, such work should be done consistently in each lesson, using all the possibilities of historical material.
