Abstract
Cognitive tasks and exercises that accompany text and non-textual components of the structure of the history book are an important component of the methodical apparatus of the modern textbook. They are diverse in terms of content and purpose. In the conditions of the introduction of a competence-based approach to learning, cognitive tasks should become an instrument for the formation of students' historical competence. At the same time, they retain the functions of organizing the active educational and cognitive activity of pupils, control and correction of the results of training. Given the diversity and multifunctionality of this component of the methodical apparatus of the textbook, cognitive tasks should be combined into a special system that will allow the teacher and students to optimally use their didactic potential.
