Abstract
In the article, critical thinking is defined as a set of mental strategies and procedures, the mastery of which involves the free use of human high-level thinking operations for the processing of information, the formulation of substantiated conclusions and assessments and decision-making. A high-quality textbook on history have to develop the critical thinking of students. This require determines the peculiarities of its design and development. The experience gained by the authors in the process of developing a textbook on the history of Ukraine for the 10-th class shows, on the one hand, the need to solve this problem within the existing methodology in history teaching changing approaches to the selection and structuring of educational content, types of cognitive tasks, features of the organization the history lesson students activity, the requirements of competence education, and on the other hand - demonstrates the need to pay attention to all aspects of the introduction of technology for the development of critical thinking. The history content in the textbook should be presented in a way that its content becomes a part and a basis for the students' thinking. It should be presented and structured in such a way that gives to students space for analysis, comparison of different sources of information, different views, positions, approaches, to synthesize their own position, to evaluate both historical events, phenomena, processes, and the results of their own learning. This makes it possible to build the learning process not as a text reading, but as a process of studying and researching the topic of various sources of knowledge contained in the textbook. Then the process of mastering the content of education prompts the thinking of students and constantly updates it. The development of critical thinking should also contribute to a special system of questions and cognitive tasks that accompanies the text of the textbook. This textbook orientation today should oriented teachers for one of the main criteria for assessment of the textbook quality.
