Abstract

The paper defines some features of the content and methods of teaching of the new educational course for high school, general principles and approaches to Civic Education teachers` role and functions, which is distinguishes from the traditional teaching of social science subjects. As features of the content and methodology of the course are: links between the subject content and actual problems of the Ukrainian civic society development and citizens activity, attention to students` critical thinking skills and skills of a competent citizen, communicative and partnerships skills with peers, teachers and community members. The authors consider that the general didactic principles of teaching civic education to be: competence-oriented and sensory-shaping character of learning process, focusing on civil and national values, content integration and interactive learning organization. This requires a qualitative change in the role of a teacher who has to transform from the person who informs and interviews the learner, the organizer of the activities of the students, the facilitator of the discussions, the consultant of student studies. Appropriate skills, skills and new professional values must gradually become the foundation of a new pedagogical style of a teacher of civic education.
