Abstract
The article deals with the question of transformation of the content of school textbooks on history in the period of independent Ukraine. The main changes in the content are determined connected with changing views on the events of national history, which took place after 1991: the textbooks were deprived of ideologization and politicization and acquired national content. This was manifested in the positive coverage of historical events, which had a negative assessment in the Soviet times, highlighting issues that were not in Soviet historiography (history of the church, the Holodomor, etc.), giving more significance to certain historical events (National Liberation Contests of 1917-1921 have acquired the status of the Ukrainian Revolution) and others. The achievements of textbook authors and the complexity of designing the contents of educational books are analyzed, caused by the lack of reliable materials of academic science and the subjective views of the authors. The ways of overcoming the subjectivity of textbook authors by means of re-modeling of methodical apparatus of textbooks are highlighted. The requirements for the development of students’ ability to think critically are named, in particular, to analyze and evaluate the interpretation of historical reality, presented in textbooks.
