Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the competence-oriented foreign language teaching, which is one of the most important means for the modernization of school education as a whole and particularly primary education. The implementation of new approaches in teaching foreign languages at the initial stage is a requirement of the new government standards in the sphere of primary education. It helps to reach the main aim of teaching foreign languages in the formation of a secondary language person, ready for communicate in the multicultural world. According to the peculiarities of the development of a modern new school, the authors of the article identified the priorities that can ensure pupils’ successful acquisition of the educational content in a foreign language defined by the current curriculum. Teaching foreign languages for pupils of grades 1–4 is considered as the first important stage in the development of school foreign education, which is versatile in relation to basic secondary education and profile education, which testifies to its purpose, continuity and continuity throughout the school course. Taking into account the unique peculiarity of this stage, there is a need to define and justify the scientific principles on which the education system should be based. These principles must comprehensively coincide with the latest trends in the development of modern foreign education and be carried out in combination with the main provisions of the European Recommendations on language education. Accordingly, the article considers and justifies the communicative, activity-based, personally oriented and cultural approaches as the priority theoretical and methodological principles and a scientific basis for the introduction of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages in institutions of primary education. The basis for determining the technology of competence-oriented teaching foreign languages at an initial stage can be the questioning of foreign language teachers from eight regions of Ukraine (a total number of respondents was 207 persons), which was conducted by the research staff of the Department of Foreign Languages Teaching at the Institute of Pedagogy of the NAES of Ukraine.
