Abstract
The article deals with the development of special education for hearing impaired children in Ukraine in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chronologically, the beginning of the nineteenth century is taken as the rising edge, as during this period, the first steps in the organization of special institutions for the education of deaf-and-deaf children were made in the territory of modern Ukraine. The upper limit is 1917, after the revolutionary events of which this system was destroyed. For special establishments of Western Ukraine the upper limit is 1939/1945, when these territories became part of the Ukrainian SSR. The author notes that in the conditions of reforming national education an important condition is rethinking the achievements of special education, outlining positive tendencies and establishing historical truth. Therefore, the history of the development of correctional education, education and pedagogical thought is an important source of building up the national education system in Ukraine, updating its content and structure, and objectively highlighting the contribution of education to the development of correctional learning. The research showed that the functioning and development of specialized institutions were influenced by the educational reforms of the time, the formation of the surdo-pedagogical community and the financial situation of the founders of the institutions.
