Abstract

The article raises the problem of civic identity, which is seen in the broader context of civic consciousness. Civic identity is a national identity and is linked with the ideology of civic nationalism. Over the past quarter-century civic identity evolved, which was manifested in the spread of the identification of Ukrainians with the political nation, which can be traced from east to west. This conclusion can be drawn by analyzing sociological data on the presidential election in Ukraine, as well as attitude towards independence of Ukraine and participation of Ukrainians in protests related to the Euromaidan events. Although Ukrainian civic identity is highly developed now, but other components of civic consciousness, associated with political-economic, political-legal and socio-psychological aspects are still underdeveloped (especially – on state-regional and local levels). It is concluded that separate components of civic consciousness (ethnic identity, political-legal consciousness, etc.) require further development; without such development, formation of the real statehood in independent country is impossible.
