Abstract
The problem of professional self-determination of students in the youth was actualized in connection with the formation of a new economic basis in Ukraine. Increasing the effectiveness of professional self-determination of the individual involves providing it with relevant psychological and pedagogical support, which is based on a certain conceptual basis. At present, there are two such bases, namely, the theory of professional self-determination and the theory of preparation for choosing a professional career. With all the diversity of approaches to determining the essence of the categories «professional self-determination» and «professional career», both theories are guided primarily by the self-concept of personality. In the course of its evolution, the category «professional self-determination» has changed significantly both with the content plan and with reference to the age range of its object. Professional self-determination is considered to be a selective attitude of a person not only to a particular profession, but to the world of professions in general, it is relevant to the individual throughout the entire period of her professional development. The category of "professional careers" in Russian pedagogy and psychology is at the stage of conceptual formation and is defined as a way to achieve goals and results in the basic form of personal self-expression, as the result of a person's professional activity and the social status he gained, as an individual's work path, expressed in professional and official form. In this context, this category is broader in alignment with the category of «professional self-determination» and in its semantic content rather corresponds to the category «life self-determination». Analysis of psychological and pedagogical research in this area allows us to talk about the convergence of the semantic content of categories of «professional self-determination» and «professional career», which makes it possible to adopt the category of «professional career» as the basic paradigm of the process of preparing a person for choosing a professional and life path and using it for him psycho-pedagogical support a complex of activities, characterized as counseling for a career.
