Abstract
The article states that in the XIX and the first decades of the XX century in universities the unique scientific and educational environment distinguished by its proper academic culture, scientific schools, educational traditions, professional communication, fundamental and innovative features and permanent scientific research was created. The initiation of Kharkiv University’s academic traditions was related to the activities of the eastern centre of people, folklore and ethnographic studies – the circle of “popular literature amateurs”. The founder of the centre I. Sreznevsky created the theoretical basis and traditions of educational practice of Slavonic historiography, ethnography, dialectology and folklore study. The significant contribution of Kharkiv University’s teachers (A. Metlynsky, O. Potebnya, M. Khalansky, M. Soumtsov, M. Drynov and others) into the formation of fundamental scientific principles of mythological, cultural and historical scientific schools, and the realization of innovative processes in educational practice of language, history, ethnographic material and popular literature study is disclosed. The experience of A. Metlynsky which substantiated the theoretical principles of professional systematization, classification of popular literature examples and the arrangement of folklore texts is analyzed. The background of O. Potebnya who went down in the world’s humanitarian and philological thought history as the developer of the theory of comparative and historical philology, as well as the founder of psychological direction in Slavonic linguistics and psychological school in Ukrainian folklore studies is described. The contextual approach to philological knowledge study and retransmission in University environment of O. Potebnya’s disciple M. Khalansky who was employing the material from dialectology, Slavonic peoples’ popular singing, namely Ukrainian and Russian ones, is outlined. The achievements of M. Soumtsov in establishing Kharkiv University’s academic traditions are analyzed. The scientist inspired forming the system of future philologists and historians professional training grounded on mythological, cultural and historical scientific schools, promoted contextual study of Ukrainian popular literature (through mythology, ritualism and history). The influence of the professor’s M. Soumtsov pedagogical mastery resulted in forming the pleiad of ethnographists, folklorists, historians who worked in educational establishments of Ukraine. The author proves that in Kharkiv University in the second part of the XIX – beginning of the XX century academic traditions and unique academic culture developing on the ground of anthropocentrism, humanization, scientific character, fundamentalization and the combination of national educational background and foreign science and practice achievements were being formed.
