Abstract
The article outlines the key approaches to implementing the principle of "dialogue of cultures" while studying foreign languages in secondary school. The authors define the main components which comprise the socio-cultural block of knowledge. It is emphasized that a teacher is to direct students’ attention to these aspects in order to develop their “cultural awareness”, including respective ideas about the culture itself, as well as the national and cultural semantic content, put into the language. At the same time, saturating the process of foreign language learning with socio-cultural information and familiarizing students with it is not considered as a sufficient condition of introducing a student to the "dialogue of cultures". In order to achieve this objective it is deemed vital that the process of foreign language training should provide students with the opportunity not only to receive relevant information from their interlocutors to meet their communication needs, but also provide them with similar information about the peculiarities of life in their country. This way the students will not only develop their awareness of ‘another culture’, but also perform the role of agents of their native culture. In this respect the authors outline types of tasks that are focused on shaping such skills. In particular these are the following: preparing projects and presentations, simulating communicative situations as well as mediation.
