Abstract
The article highlights the humanistic aspects of the teaching and upbringing activity of the Kiev private women's commercial school, founded (1900) by public figures – the married couple L. and N. Volodkevich. It is justified that it was a new type of educational institution and the first commercial college in the Ukrainian lands of the Russian Empire, which contributed to the expansion of women's vocational education opportunities. Attention is focused on the progressive changes in the formation of the content of education in the commercial school (wide introduction of professionally oriented training courses, ensuring the high level of the general education of pupils), on establishing democratic principles of management (election of managers, collegial decision-making), on humane treatment of students (neglect of social and the ethnic origin of children, an individual approach to teaching, a differentiated approach to paying for education, the rejection of marks of knowledge assessment, etc.).
