Abstract
Specifies the disadvantages of modern textbooks for general education and vocational schools. The article describes the state of textbooks in the countries of Western Europe, North America, Japan, Norway, and the Russian Federation. The requirements, which should correspond to the national textbook, are considered. The didactic functions of the textbooks are characterized, namely: the informational culture of the textbook, its transformational, systematizing functions, the function of consolidation and self-control, integrating, coordinating, educational-developing, motivational, control-correction (training) functions. The main condition for writing a good textbook is defined.
