Abstract
Reforming system of school education in Ukraine calls for implementation of strategies aimed at forming competences that will enable students with skills necessary to deal with a wide range of challenges in modern multicultural and competitive environment. In this respect high school is considered as a key stage in preparing students both to independent life and their future profession. In order to provide students with an opportunity to develop skills critical for their future life, elective courses are being developed by teachers and scientists in Ukraine. As far as many students express their great interest in developing skills of business communication, an elective course “English for Business Communication” was developed. It is the result of cooperation of scientist from the Institute of Pedagogical Sciences (National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine) and educators from Ukrainian schools where the course samples were tested. According to author’s concept the course is based on communicative and competence based approach to learning foreign languages. Whereas texts foster cognitive development of students and raise their intercultural awareness, the system of tasks and exercises is aimed at development of students’ linguistic, professional and communicative competences. The system of tasks and exercises represents a hierarchy of steps aimed at shaping students’ readiness for communication in business sphere. The main emphasis is made on communicative tasks that encourage students’ interaction in the classroom. Besides students are encouraged to perform creative tasks, use additional sources of information. Some of the suggested tasks and exercises are illustrated with samples from the elective course. It is deemed that the course stimulates permanent communicative interaction, involves simultaneous development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, thus preparing students to efficient communication in real business environment.
