Abstract

Today, the world faces the tendency when the children read less and less; that is why many scientists are interested in studying the problem of children’s reading. The author of the article analyses the works on children’s reading published in the pedagogical Doshkolnoye Vospitaniye (Preschool Education) Journal in Kyiv in 1911–1917 edited by Natalia Dmytrivna Lubenets (1877–1943). The journal is presented in the library holdings of V. O. Sukhomlynskyi SSPL of Ukraine; it belongs to the research Documents on Psycho-educational and Historical-cultural Issues Published in the 19th – early 20th Centuries object which constitutes a national heritage of Ukraine. Such methods as historical and bibliographic method, content analysis, comparison and generalisation were used in order to identify, determine the quantity, state the subject matter of publications on children’s reading, clear up the role of the journal in popularisation of literature as a means of social, intellectual and moral development of readers.
