Abstract
The conceptual basis for creating foreign-language textbooks on elective courses for students of profile school are revealed in the article. The dominant role of a textbook as the basic means of mastering a foreign language elective course by high school students is noted. It refers, particular, to the construction of the elective course textbook “Culture and Art of Great Britain”, which should expend and deep 10–11th forms school students’ knowledge about the cultureof the country whose language is being studied.Special attention is paid to the characteristics of didactic and methodological principles for teaching foreign languages and cultures within that elective course, principles on selecting contents of a textbook, its functions, methods and techniques of teaching, structure, etc. In the process of constructing a textbook mentioned abovethe author will be based on the principles of high awareness, development of critical thinking, adherence to inter-subjects relationships with related sciences, due to which the proposed elective course would effectively solve the problem of developing a holistic perception by high school students of teaching a language of a foreign country, its history, culture and to acquaint them with the customs and traditions of the people that use this language. In our opinion, one of the most perspective ways of learning foreign language within elective courses is a module system of education. That’s why this system is a basis of constructing the elective course textbook “Culture and Art of Great Britain”, which consists of ten thematic modules, and each module has from three to five themes.Average number of hours on studying any thematic module or theme is determined by a teacher independently. The conceptual bases described in this article are also suitable for creating textbooks on elective courses in other foreign languages.
