Abstract
The article focuses on the role and place of competency-based approach in teaching foreign language to the upper forms students of profile school. Different approaches to the interpretation of such notions as “competency-based approach”,“competency”, “competence”, “communicative competence”, “foreign communicative competence” are analyzed. The components of foreign communicative competence, such as speech, linguistic, sociocultural and general educational competencies, are characterized. The requirements to the formation of elective courses’ content in foreign language for profile school according to competency-based approach were determined.
