Abstract

The present article analyses research by European and Ukrainian educational organizations on the issue of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education in order to identify negative and positive consequences and potential opportunities for the higher education system. The subject of the study is the functioning of the higher education system under pandemic conditions. The research issues included: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on science and higher education at global and regional levels; the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for universities; the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on student and lecturer interaction. The following research methods were used to determine the main directions of the research: secondary analysis and interpretation of the results of sociological surveys; systematization and classification of the theoretical and factual material used; analysis of the experience of higher education functioning under the conditions of the alert transition to distance learning; comparative analysis with foreign experience; predictive analysis to determine the prospects for further research. Based on the analyzed reports and studies of European and Ukrainian educational organizations on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education, the following causes of negative consequences were identified: sudden shift to distance learning and teaching; problems related to internationalization and academic mobility; distrust of scientific research results; suspension of university cooperation with various organizations; reduction of the amount of education funding; loss of validity of long-term education; lack of readiness of lecturers and students for distance learning; disruptions in the organization of the educational process; lack of interactive cooperation between student and lecturer; lack of appropriate forms of control and objective assessment; inadequate material and technical supplies. However, national education has potential for renewal. For the effective functioning of the higher education system, it is necessary to conduct a self-analysis that will allow educational institutions to test the effectiveness of existing digital solutions, identify their needs for technological modernization, provide retraining of lecturers, identify strategies for further development, stabilize education and bring it to a new level of quality.
