Abstract

The expediency, possibility and features of the playback theatre performance in the audience of active military personnel are analysed, based on the real experience of such performances of the Kyiv Playback Theatre «Déjà vu plus» during the war. The expediency is in creating an atmosphere for working through the experiences and problems that actually concern soldiers: fear of battle, motivation to fight, the power of unity, longing for relatives, anger, returning to civilian life, etc. For the military command, the playback theatre becomes a research tool – a «psychometer» of the moral and psychological state and other issues of military service members. The opportunity to perform for the military is a professional and personal challenge for the playback team, which undertakes the difficult task of establishing a trusting contact with the soldiers, without going beyond the humane values of the playback theatre, for which there must be a common ideological position with the audience. In general, the speeches did not establish any specifics of the playback theatre, which confirms the universality and balance of playback theatre’s technology, as well as the unity of the army and the people of Ukraine. Two features of playback theatre that are familiar to civilian performances but can be harmful in working with combatants are identified: the risk of «deconstructing the identity of the warrior» and «humanizing the antagonist». After analysing the systems of psychological rehabilitation principles and recommended intervention protocols (USA, Israel, NATO), it was found that the psychological conditions created by the playback theatre correspond to their general spirit and stages, which ensures the risk of deconstruction of the warrior’s identity. That is, standard playback theatre procedures do not need modifications, but to minimize risks, in addition to respecting the audience, stories and feelings, the following are necessary: not expanding the contexts of the stories (keeping the context of the military service); minimizing the interpretation of events and emotions; minimization of stage attention to the antagonist; emphasis on authorship; lack of motivation to act, etc. Thus, applied playback theatre as an art therapy tool for psychosocial work with soldiers can be used both to improve combat training indicators and to psychologically restore actual combatants.
