Abstract

The paper deals with the distinction between the two ‘types’ of ethics – social and individual ethics, or heteronomic and autonomous ethics, as expressed by Kazimierz Twardowski, in relation to scientific ethics. It is argued that scientific activity, being universal in its nature, is possible only when being carried out within an open community. Thus, it is the emergent current of Open Science that could provide an opportunity to oevercome the said ethical dichotomy.
