Abstract

The modern labor market features and trends in its development are summarized by the authors. The professional preferences of modern high school students are described. The study results of gifted high school students’ professional self-determination, personal and cognitive factors are presented in the article. Gifted students’ ideas inconsistency about the labor market and the current state of affairs, students' lack of their interests awareness, individual abilities, strengths and weaknesses; episodic career guidance that involves a passive student position were revealed by the experiment. The authors show that the structure of the students’ interests who participated in the research work is characterized by greater formation, clarity and expressiveness than their peers’ in the control group. A comparative analysis of boys and girls’ intelligence development indicators (general, mathematical, spatial, verbal) is presented. It is shown that in general intelligence, first of all, due to mathematical and partly spatial thinking, young boys have an advantage over girls. Five independent groups of interests and aptitudes (educational and professional interests profiles) are empirically identified: economics and law (management, economics, law); humanitarian (philology, art, history, literary art); natural (biology, chemistry, medicine, geography, risk and sport); engineering and technology (physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, with a denial of interest in law and literary art); socio-pedagogical (pedagogy, service, denial of interest in science) are described. Empirically identified intellectual support (cognitive correlates) of each presented profile is performed. The authors investigated whether gifted high school students’ choice of profession coincides with their interests and abilities. Prospects for further research are described.
