Abstract

It is well recognized that the development of fine motor skills is strongly associated with the improvement of cognitive and emotional spheres and the language. Advanced fine motor skills enable productive learning and cognitive activities. Our research gives particular attention to the development of fine motor skills of elementary school children with Williams syndrome through literary-and-music activities. Williams syndrome (also known as “elfin face syndrome”) is a genetic disorder characterized by peculiarities of the appearance and affects intellectual abilities (however, certain intellectual qualities might be observed). Facial features of the children affected with Williams syndrome could be described as “elfin” (a broad forehead, bright blue eyes, full low-set drooping cheeks, wide-set mouth with full lips, short blunt nose, acute chin and swollen eyelids), that is why this disorder has got a name “elfin face syndrome”. Cognitive abilities of children with Williams syndrome typically range from mild-to-moderate levels of intellectual disability and an IQ score of 60 is typical. Such learners often have particular problems with writing skills (problems with fine motor skills), reading and counting. However, despite the aforementioned regrettable characteristics, children with “elfin face syndrome” possess two peculiarities: advanced oral language skills characterised by poetic expression and emotionality; and an inborn musical talent (perfect pitch, an exceptional sense of rhythm and musical memory). Activities aiming at reducing or overcoming the aforesaid difficulties encountered by children with Williams syndrome should be systematic and thorough (especially, in preschool age and at elementary school) and should be implemented through numerous speech-and-manual exercises and games, initiated and conducted by parents, psychologists and educators in the course of individual activities in a home environment or lessons in an inclusive class at establishments providing general education. Activities with such children are particularly effective if performed together with their peers. The exercises presented in the complex for the development of fine motor skills of learners with Williams syndrome could be broadly divided into three groups: I. Exercises with voice comments of a teacher (basing on literary works by N. Zabila). II. Exercises with voice comments of the learner (basing on literary works by N. Zabila). III. Music-and-rhythmic exercises basing on literary works by N. Zabila.
