Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of the theory and practice of using characteristics of students in educational institutions of Ukraine of the early twentieth century. The author has analyzed the state of training of future teachers prior to the compilation of the characteristics, compiled by the students of Glukhov Teacher's Institute, students of the Kyiv 2nd Religious School, teachers of the Kyiv College of Pavel Galagan and Kharkiv Womens Sunday School of Christina Alchevska. It is proved that character reference of the student was widely used in the course of individualization of the educational process in the practice of educational institutions of Ukraine in the early twentieth century, and its aim and purpose were dependent on the type of the institution and ranged from the method of evaluation to the method of the study of the student by future teachers and the outcome document concerning the student's stay in the school. As a rule, characteristics of the student of the early twentieth century was compiled according to a certain scheme, which contained the following structural elements: his/her social origin, the level of development of basic mental processes (memory, imagination, attention, thinking), attitudes toward the school, favorite subjects, personal skills and inclinations.
