Abstract
The article outlines the functions of the school textbook, in particular, the motivational, ideological, value-orientation, developmental, and informational. The emphasis is on changing the priority of the traditional functions of the textbook, in particular informative, and proposes ways to implement the function in the modern social conditions. Particular attention is paid to the problem of introducing a competent approach in the educational process, which enables the use of theoretical knowledge as a practical means of explaining phenomena and solving problems in specific situations.
