Abstract

Forgiveness and self-forgiveness in the context of psychological assistance of combatants. This article deals with the problems of forgiveness and self-forgiveness in the context of modern psychology and psychotherapy. The peculiarities of these concepts in foreign languages, religious and philosophical discourses is reviewed. Military personnel serving in war are confronted with ethical and moral challenges. An act of serious transgression that leads to serious inner conflict because the experience is at odds with core ethical and moral beliefs is called moral injury. whereas PTSD is a mental disorder that requires a diagnosis, moral injury is a dimensional problem. More specifically, moral injury has been defined as perpetrating, failing to prevent, bearing witness to, or learning about acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. Limited research has focused on protective factors associated with decreased suicide risk among military personnel and veterans. Self-forgiveness, defined as "the act of generosity and kindness toward the self following self-perceived inappropriate action," may be associated with decreased risk for suicide ideation and attempts, but few studies have examined this relationship. Results suggest self-forgiveness may reduce risk for posttraumatic stress and suicide attempts among military personnel. The situational and dispositional caused forgiveness discussed, defined psychological mechanisms of interpersonal forgiveness and self-forgiveness summarized, the stages of psychotherapeutic work with forgiveness in overcoming crisis situations reviewed.
