Abstract

This article deals with authenticity as the subjective sense of being one’s true self. The concept of authenticity described as a related to well-being. The investigation of authentic leadership has increase in scholarly attention over the last decade. It’s shown that authentic leadership is an approach to leadership that emphasizes building the leader’s legitimacy through honest relationships with followers which value their input and are built on an ethical foundation. This article provide an overview of authentic leadership contents, including the diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives presented, followed by a discussion of alternative conceptual foundations and definitions for the constructs of authenticity and authentic leadership. A detailed description of the components of authentic leadership theory is provided next. The similarities and defining features of authentic leadership theory in comparison to transformational, charismatic and transactional leadership perspectives are subsequently examined. A theoretical and empirical conceptualization of the authentic leadership scales are analized. The implications for leadership research and practice are explored.
