Abstract

The peculiarities of interpretation of the term “differentiated instruction” by Ukrainian and American scientists are analyzed in the article. The American educators define differentiation as a teacher's reacting responsively to a learner's needs. The goal of a differentiated classroom is maximum student growth and individual success. Differentiation according to learning style (individual or collaborative), preferred learning medium (visual, kinesthetic, or aural), and ability (multiple resources to address multiple levels of academic readiness) is possible when integrating ID strategies at varying grade levels into the instructional setting. Therefore this paper highlights findings from recent American research regarding the knowledge that Ukrainian teachers need in order to effectively integrate technology into instruction. The highlighted strategies include: stations (different spots in the classroom where students work on different tasks at the same time); agendas (personalized lists of tasks that students must complete in a specified amount of time); orbital studies are (independent investigations, usually from three to six weeks in length, which revolve around some aspect of the curriculum); complex instruction (a strategy designed to help teachers address the needs of culturally, linguistically and academically diverse students) and others instructional strategies that support differentiation. This paper also highlights the basic principles of the organization of differentiated instruction both in American and Ukrainian secondary school.
