Abstract
The handbook “Virtual Exchanges: Practical Case Studies” is a Ukrainian-language translation and adaptation of materials by Paola Pitti (Italy) and Oleksandra Yama (Austria), prepared by Svitlana Lytvynova (Ukraine). The publication has been supplemented with materials reflecting Ukrainian experience in organizing international virtual exchanges within the framework of the Erasmus+ CBHE SIN-NEC project. The handbook explores the essence, key characteristics, types, and pedagogical benefits of virtual exchanges as a means of internationalizing education, developing intercultural communication, and fostering digital collaboration. It provides practical recommendations on defining learning objectives, identifying international partners, securing institutional support, designing curricula, selecting digital platforms, integrating synchronous and asynchronous interaction, organizing participants’ activities, and assessing learning outcomes. International case studies from various educational contexts are presented, highlighting their organizational features, challenges, and solutions. The Ukrainian supplementary materials illustrate the practical application of these approaches through the organization and evaluation of a virtual exchange involving the Institute for Digitalisation of Education of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine and international partners. The appendices provide practical guidelines for planning communication, facilitating interaction among participants, and using online tools. The publication is intended for higher education instructors, researchers, academic staff, coordinators of international educational projects, international office personnel, and all those planning to implement or improve virtual exchange programmes.
