Abstract

The presentation explores the role of education in the development of Ukrainian women’s intellectual independence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on the work of Khrystyna Alchevska, Sofiia Rusova, Mariia Hrinchenko, Lidiia Depolovych, Oleksandra Yefymenko, Natalia Mirza-Avakiants, Nadiia Shulhyna-Ishchuk, Natalia Lubenets, Yevheniia Yaroshynska, Antonina Hendrykhivska, Oksana Sukhoverska, and other educators, it traces how women exercised their intellectual freedom through teaching practice, authorship of textbooks and educational publications, the development of pedagogical concepts, scholarly research, and the establishment of educational institutions. The presentation highlights the importance of women’s solidarity and mutual support in professional development and overcoming social barriers. Particular attention is paid to the collections of the Museum of Education of Ukraine as a source base for research into women’s pedagogical biography and for bringing Ukrainian women educators’ intellectual legacy back into scholarly and public discourse.
