Abstract

The presentation explores the personal and institutional dimensions of preserving Ukrainian identity in the diaspora through the life and educational activities of Ivan Broznytsky (1909–1991). Drawing on biographical information and documentary materials, it outlines the main stages of his life, including his teaching career in Ukraine, political persecution, captivity during the Second World War, displacement in Germany, service in the French Foreign Legion, and emigration to Australia. Particular attention is paid to Broznytsky’s distance studies at the Ukrainian Technical and Economic Institute while he was in North Africa, as well as to his correspondence, including a letter to Vasyl Sukhomlynsky. The presentation examines his contribution to the development of Ukrainian schooling in Australia: his leadership of the Taras Shevchenko Saturday School in Melbourne, his tenure as chairman of the Ukrainian Central School Council in Australia from 1965 to 1968, his involvement in coordinating curricula, his editorial and journalistic activities, and his work documenting the history of Ukrainian schooling on the continent. It distinguishes between the personal dimension of identity preservation, associated with language, memory, education, and correspondence, and the institutional dimension, implemented through Ukrainian educational organizations. The presentation highlights the significance of Broznytsky’s experience for research in Ukrainian pedagogical biography and for understanding contemporary challenges in preserving Ukrainian identity abroad amid war and forced migration.
